The Gates re-revisited

The snow storm postponed the removal of the Gates, and, since I was in the neighborhood...

My category is next, but I'm chill
Lisa hosted an Oscar party to celebrate her birthday. We dressed for the occassion and sipped Champagne punch. Highlights: Chris Rock, Yo Yo Ma, Prince. Lowlights: Beyonce and Andrew Lloyd Weber, Beyonce and Josh Groban, Beyonce. I miss the Debbie Allen Dance Number.

My friend Kathryn was in town this weekend, so off to the Gates we returned. I'm still not tired of it.
Date with Dottie
We went to the obvious places. Next time, we'll venture off the beaten.
Dotty passed through this threshold many times before I ever used it as a short cut. I would have taken a photo of my feet inside, but the security guy looked scary.
Dotty ate lunch here with her friends. One day I'll muster the courage to go in - and when I do - I'll photograph my feet here, too.
So many plaques.

Between 49th and 50th Streets
One can walk from W. 46th Street to W. 50th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues via public plazas between buildings. I love this "trick" for its crowds-of-tourists-avoiding possibilities. One day, I'll show you how to walk from W. 44th Street to W. 49th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue while avoiding the rain (as well as the crowds of tourists).
Happy Presidents' Day
The best way to honor presidents of yore and lore: watch season one of
Arrested Development at the neighbors' with a (several) bottle(s) of Cabernet. When it snows, you won't have far to stumble home.
Sidewalk ends
Avoiding the construction on the way to the PATH train
Jersey City holds its pedestrians in very low esteem. Every day that I choose to walk from the PATH train to my office*, I put my life in danger. There is a great deal of construction going on in the Exchange Place section of JC: the replacement of traffic lights, which involves the removal of the walk/don't walk indicators at a particularly busy intersection; the destruction of sidewalks, which force me to walk in the street; and the removal of a strategically placed STOP sign, which requires I be extra careful crossing in a crosswalk. All of these factors, combined with an "I dare you to cross the street while I'm trying to turn right on red" attitude of local drivers, make my morning and afternoon commute that much more exciting. As my friend and co-worker
Matt says, "If you want to die but are afraid of actually killing yourself, try walking in Jersey City."
*By "choose to walk..." I mean choose to go to work.

Napping Mo in between
The day after Mo's birthday, we had Chicken Ranch rehearsal at 1:30 and then went to Jed and Teresa's to be tired, hungover and lazy. We ordered Thai takeout and watched TV between naps - a perfect, sleepy Saturday.
Mo's birthday
It's my best girl-squirrel's birthday today. She called me last night at 12:36 am to remind me...as if I could forget. We are going to a favorite local hang, Jake's, for the celebration. I made a gazillion cupcakes, sans whole wheat flour, and, I think they turned out okay this time.
Mmmm...
Happy birthday, Mo!

Citigrass kicking out the bluegrass jams
I spent this Mardi Gras at the Delta Grill on 9th Ave. with my pal, Cindee, her beau, Dave, and his friend, Ed. The free "hurricanes" smacked surprisingly of cherry Kool-Aid and turned my tongue red, but the live music more than made up for it. Citigrass twanged out some killer covers like "Wish You Were Here," "I Just Called to Say I Love You," and "Like a Prayer," as well as some bluegrass classics. My dancing feet were very happy.
They closed their set with an audience-participatory, acoustic version of "May the Circle Be Unbroken." The bass player stood right next to me. Sigh.
