Titanic commute

The icy Hudson made for a bumpy water crossing from Jersey City to the 38th Street pier. Somehow, I don't think that life vest would save me from hypothermia. I'll stick to the train until the spring thaw.

Billyburg craft night

My pal, Flo, hosted a crafty evening last night and taught the gathered to knit. When I wasn't cramming my face with rice krispy treats, I was able to finish two projects, including a hat for my roommate and Michele's birthday present.

I'm in awe of all the creative people in my life (the handicrafters and the comedy-crafters), and I'm the luckiest girl-squirrel in the world.

Blizzard schmizzard

Pirate Tere's birthday was celebrated last night at McM* despite the winter dumping. She's a woman whose beauty and spirit defies description and is definitely worth braving the blizzard.

Stomping to the deli

Neither wind, nor rain, nor snow, etc. will keep me from my diet Coke fix, either.

SHLD Week 2005 (Day Seven)

Learning secrets of Law & Order

Well, Scott is on his way back to Indiana for another year, my date for tonight cancelled and there's a blizzard on the way. You wouldn't know from the clear blue sky today - perfect for last minute thrift store shopping and stocking up on bagels for Scott to take back to the Land of Lender's.

Last night, we made a farewell trip to Arriba! Arriba! for Scott's last night in town. Brian met us for dinner and then we popped over Posh for a nightcap. Scott met a cute fellow who works for Law & Order. He alternately flirted with Scott and regaled me with trade secrets that I swore to keep. Then they made out; it was adorable. Around 4 AM, Scott bid his new friend adieu and the three of us stumbled over to Renaissance Diner for veggie burgers and fries. Scott lasted until the food came; we got his wrapped to go. Needless to say, we slept in today.

SHLD Week 2005 is over, but he'll be back. Maybe in March...

SHLD Week 2005 (Day Five)

Drinking margaritas by discoball-light

Scott has been here five days; our week has gone something like this:

Sunday
- Scott went to the matinee of Wonderful Town while I slept in. Later, we watched the Golden Globes at home and drank G and Ts. Dan and my new friend Ori were also in attendance; Brian was supposed to come over, but he blew us off. Jerk.

Monday - Auditions all day. Scott had dinner with Dick and Susie (his producers) and Joseph Stein (yes, THAT Joseph Stein). We took a night off from booze.

Tuesday - Callbacks all day. Scott, Dick and Susie saw Good Vibrations (I was spared). We slipped out to Posh for a wee cocktail and met the cutest 24-year-old boys in the world; one was a redhead (for Scott) and one was a law student (for me, except gay), both were adorable. Did I say they were 24?

Wednesday - I had to work, Scott bought shoes. We made our first trip to Arriba! Arriba! of the week and I had too many margaritas in a short time. We did a walk-through at ear-pounding Therapy and opted for Posh. Big mistake. There was a live game show about to begin hosted by an aggressive drag queen with a tre uninspired name that I wish to God I could remember. After she wrangled two contestants from her unwitting audience, they played Pictionary. Then our lovely hostess did a spasmodic version of a Britney Spears song I thank the Lord I can't remember. She flung herself around the bar so much, her skirt rode up and you could see the crotch of her tights. Nice. Shortly thereafter, we made a desperate retreat, but not before some guy got up and sang an original song. By original, I mean he wrote it. Unfortunately, this I remember:

I'm a fag
I do drag
And I hang out with a hag.
I pledge my allegience
To the rainbow flag.

Sheesh. Get the maribou hook.

We went back to Therapy and had a beer in blaring techo peace.

SHLD Week 2005 (Day One observed)

Scott's Here, Let's Drink Week 2005

My darling friend and former roommate, Scott, comes to visit from the Indiana hinterlands once every January to hold auditions for his theater. He arrived late Friday afternoon and, because of hours of delays, was too tuckered out to Rummikub last night. So, the official start of SHLD Week waited until Saturday.

We had a lovely lunch at West Side Cottage, then trapsed off to H&M for the requisite shopping adventure. Scott bought a pair of hot pants (hot pants, not hotpants) and a cool striped shirt. I purchased lipgloss, earrings and scored a kick-ass black dress for $10. Shivering in the winter wind, we hopped a bus to meet an old (long time not aged) friend for dinner and drinks.

Waiting for a bus on 6th Ave.

Riding the M7

We met Brian at City Grill on Columbus for a quick cocktail. He was sitting at the bar looking stunningly Euro-trash in long blonde hair, knit cap and blue-tinted sunglasses (he had his reasons). Scott flirted with the gorgeous Heather-Hedley-look-alike bartender and I repeatedly checked my cell phone for new messages (I was even irritating myself) before heading over to Candle Bar on Amsterdam. Since The Works closed its sticky doors, Candle Bar has become the new seedy Upper West Side pick-up spot. Within minutes of our arrival, Brian and I claimed the pool table and some guy stuck his tongue down Scott's throat while he waited at the bar for our drinks. 10 cents a dance, baby.

Brian kicked our asses at 8-ball (not once, not twice, but three times, lady) a mere 24-hours after his Lasik surgery. A pirate watched in lusty admiration.

Do you like to Rummikub?

Anticipating game night.

Michele braved the wet for 'kub.

Teresa nearly stepped on my heart. She decided not to.

Jed, Teresa, Michele, Jeff and I like to Rummikub. Do you like to friends with us?

PS - Dr. Doom wants to Rummikub.

My ghostwriting client and I nearly pulled an all-nighter to finish her book. From Wednesday to Friday, I only slept 4 hours, but it's done. Finally. I can go to SC tonight and relax (and sleep) with no guilt. Happy new year to me.

Shoes on, shoes off

Shedding the mary janes outside the yoga studio

The Karma Yogis at my studio have me to thank for the new "no food" rule. My volunteer shift begins when my workday ends (5:30) and I finish around 9 - 9:30, so I brought in some noodle soup from the Japanese place downstairs. Apparently, the smell offended someone leaving the 4:00 class. The owner, attempting to justify my banishment to the upstairs lobby and the instantly-imposed restriction, informed me that many of the yogis are vegetarian. Guess what? So am I. I'm a volunteer vegetarian.
